Native to South America's Andes Mountains, Alpacas are closely related to the Llama. Alpacas, however, are smaller in stature and are mainly raised for their longer and softer fiber. |
|
The most common variety of Alpaca is the Huacaya (pronounced “wah-ki-ah”) whose fiber has a thick crimp and grows perpendicular to its body, forming a fluffy, wooly appearance. Alpacas are intelligent, graceful and easy to raise. They can weigh anywhere from 90 to 200 lbs. and measure 30-36" tall at the withers. The gestation period of the Alpaca is 11 1/2 months with only one cria being born at a time. Twins are a very rare occurrence. These beautiful animals are adaptable and known to be disease-resistant. |
