Native to South America's Andes Mountains, Alpacas are closely related to the Llama. Alpacas, however, are smaller in stature and are mainly raised for their longer and softer fiber.

The most common variety of Alpaca is the Huacaya (pronounced “wah-ki-ah”) whose fiber has a thick crimp and grows perpendicular to its body, forming a fluffy, wooly appearance.

Alpacas are intelligent, graceful and easy to raise. They can weigh anywhere from 90 to 200 lbs. and measure 30-36" tall at the withers.

The gestation period of the Alpaca is 11 1/2 months with only one cria being born at a time. Twins are a very rare occurrence.

These beautiful animals are adaptable and known to be disease-resistant.
